Sɛkyerɛ "Kontonkyi" township is located in the Sɛkyerɛ Kumawu District of the Ashanti Region. It should not be confused with the broader “Sɛkyerɛ” traditional and administrative area, which includes several districts.

Sɛkyerɛ, is approximately 54 kilometres northeast of Kumasi. Sɛkyerɛ is officially listed among the settlements in the district, alongside Kumawu, Bodomase, Banko, Dadease, Besoro, Oyoko, Wonoo, and other communities.

Economic activity

Sɛkyerɛ and the surrounding communities are primarily agricultural. The principal crops grown across the district include:

• Yam
• Maize
• Plantain
• Rice
• Cassava and other food crops
• Cocoa

Livestock farming is also practised, particularly poultry, goats, sheep and pigs. Agriculture is the main source of employment and
household income in Sɛkyerɛ. Earlier district statistics indicated that more than 80% of agricultural households participated in crop farming.

Small-scale trading, transportation, construction, craftsmanship and public-sector employment—particularly education and
healthcare—also support the local economy.

Education

One of the town’s most important institutions is Sɛkyerɛ Kusi Senior High Technical School, sometimes shortened to SEKTECH or Sɛkyerɛ Kusi SHTS.

The school has therefore grown from serving the local community primarily into an institution of national importance, providing academic, technical and vocational opportunities to young people from across Ghana.

Culture and traditional life

Sɛkyerɛ lies within the broader Asante cultural area. The principal local language is Asante Twi, while English is used in formal
education and government administration.

The Sɛkyerɛ Kontonkyi area lies within a transition between Ghana’s semi-deciduous forest and savannah environments. The landscape supports farming, forest resources and wildlife.

The district includes the Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary, known for:

The sanctuary is located immediately within Sɛkyerɛ lands.

The Green Table Mountain

Sɛkyerɛ is located near the Atwea Mountains, which are widely known for their famous prayer camps and spiritual retreats. The mountain range extends towards Sɛkyerɛ, where it forms a distinctive natural feature known as the Green Table Mountain. The mountain derives its name from its broad, relatively flat appearance and the rich green vegetation covering its slopes and summit.

The Green Table Mountain overlooks an area of largely undisturbed virgin forest. Together, the mountain and the forest create a beautiful natural landscape that provides a habitat for indigenous plants, birds and other wildlife. This remarkable environment is an important part of Sɛkyerɛ's natural heritage and has the potential to support conservation, ecotourism, hiking,, research and environmentally responsible community development.
